calm mind, healthy body, happy life

Ever feel like you just can’t relax? – Here’s why and how meditation can help.

Ever felt like you just can't relax?
These days we pack a lot in, there never seems to be a moment to spare and even if we manage to snatch one, we can’t relax easily and find ourselves still in ‘rushing’ mode. Even sitting down to drink a cup of tea seems self- indulgent so we might make a to-do list or read something worthwhile at the same time! Maybe even walk around doing jobs with the cup in our hands. Sound familiar?
The only problem with this is that we get into the habit of constantly being in ‘switched-on’ mode. It becomes more and more difficult to switch off or enjoy the moment and even little things seem big. For some people even when it’s the designated time to sleep it becomes impossible to relax and sleep does not come or is broken and disturbed.
In meditation, we re-learn how to relax deeply and re-connect with our natural state of steadiness and ease. It is chance to give our thinking, analyzing, judging mind a rest and re-connect with our inner peace (apologies – I tried not to use that phrase but it was unavoidable!) Regular practice means that we are able to relax more easily in our everyday lives and to be less disturbed and unsettled by our day to day demands. Sleep starts to come naturally and easily and if we wake up in the night, we can use the techniques to help relax us again.
For me, the more I practice, the better I feel , and guess what – sometimes I even manage to enjoy a whole cup of hot tea – organic red bush tea of course, well I am a yoga teacher!
If you would you like to try out some mind calming meditation techniques and learn how to release tension for yourself, I teach small groups on the first Wednesday morning of each month.
Each workshop includes gentle movement, breathing practices and several led relaxations and meditations to give you the opportunity to personally experience what meditation is all about. I also explain the theory behind the practice and share the potential benefits which make meditation a life enhancer for a growing number of practitioners all around the world. There is plenty of time for feedback, questions, discussion and suggestions of how to start and continue practising at home. For details visit www.halcyonyoga.com/classes.
